St. Peter, Minn. / St. Peter
As her first season swimming of for Gustavus winds down, Ashley Lager (St. Peter, Minn.) continues to get better and better for the defending MIAC champs. She was at her all-time best over the weekend at the St. Thomas Conference Invite, winning one event, helping another relay to a first-place finish, recording a total of five top-three finishes, and swimming lifetime best times in all six of her events. For her tremendous all-around performance, Lager was named the MIAC Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.
Lager's big weekend included a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.30, which is the No. 2-ranked time in the MIAC this season. She also helped the 200-yard medley relay team to a second-place finish, and her leadoff split of 27.87 was the fastest in the meet, in addition to contributing to the Gusties' first-place showing in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:01.95). The first-year swimmer also finished third in both the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.34) and the 200-yard freestyle(2:00.70) with a seventh-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:24.70) and lifetime best times in all six events.
This weekend's meet at St. Thomas was the Gusties' final tune-up prior to the 2013 MIAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, where they will attempt to win their fourth-consecutive conference championship, and sixth MIAC title in the last seven years. The MIAC Championships will be held Feb. 14-16 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
