The Gustavus women's swimming and diving team is off to another great start in 2012-13, with sophomore swimmer Jennifer Strom (Rochester, Minn./Century) playing a starring role thus far. Saturday, Strom helped Gustavus finish first out of three teams at the Saint John's/Saint Ben's Mini-Invitational by winning three individual events and helping a pair of Gustie relays also touch the wall first. Her time in the 400-yard individual medley registered as the new top time in the MIAC this season. For her performance, Strom was named the MIAC Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.
Strom swam to individual victory Saturday in the 400-yard individual medley, where her time of 4:46.12 now ranks as the fastest in the conference this season. She also won a pair of freestyle events, taking first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:20.90, and the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:01.32. Both of those times rank in the top four in the MIAC this season. Strom also helped the Gustavus 200-yard medley relay (1:50.97) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:43.28) capture first-place finishes as well. Through two weeks of competition, she is undefeated in six different individual events, also holding the MIAC's top time in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke (1:06.35, 2:24.81) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.13).
So far in 2012-13, Gustavus has won two of its three events, and now will take a short break before diving back in the pool at the end of the month. The Gusties will travel to Minneapolis for the Jena Freeman Invitational on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, and then they will take the rest of 2012 off. Gustavus will begin the 2013 portion of its schedule on Jan. 11 at Carleton.
