The Saint Benedict women's swimming and diving team stepped up a level to take on local NCAA Division II rival St. Cloud State, but Blazer sophomore Stephanie Bierman (Apple Valley, Minn.) was certainly up to the challenge. The Saint Benedict swimmer won three events - two individuals events and one relay - despite the Division II competition. For her performance, Bierman was named the MIAC Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.
Friday's performance marked the third time this season Bierman was a triple winner in one meet. She finished the 50-yard freestyle in 24.84 to finish first, and added a victory in a rare appearance in the 200-yard breaststroke thanks to a time of 1:12.24. She won the 200-breast by three seconds. She closed her busy and victorious day by anchoring the Blazers' first-place 200-yard freestyle relay team, which won with a time of 1:42.65.
The Blazers and Bierman will be back in the pool in search of further success Saturday when they travel to St. Paul, Minn., for the St. Kate's Invite, which is set to begin at 8 a.m. The Blazers will wrap up the regular season the following weekend at St. Thomas' Conference Invite, which will be the team's final tune-up prior to the 2014 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
