The St. Thomas women's swimming and diving team has had a successful start to the 2013-14 season, junior All-American Honorable Mention swimmer Mariann Kukielka (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) leading the way. The junior was instrumental in the team's dual win at Carleton, as she won a pair of individual events and led a relay team to victory as well. For her performance, Kukielka was named the first MIAC Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week of the season.
Kukielka won a pair of butterfly events - the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard butterfly - at Carleton while setting one Thorpe Pool record. Her time of 58.38 in the 100-fly broke the facility record and ranks as the seventh-fastest time in Division III thus far in 2013-14. Her winning time in the 200 was 2:17.74 and she swam a 26.77 split to help the Tommies win the 200-yard medley relay (1:52.70). St. Thomas won 10 of 12 events to defeat the Knights and claim the Margate Cream Cheese Memorial traveling trophy.
St. Thomas will be back in action with a pair of events this week. Friday, the Tommies will host the JoAnn Andregg Invite in St. Paul at 6 p.m. and Saturday they'll travel across town to the Macalester campus for the Rog Ahlman Invite at 1 p.m. The team will then take a break until December, where it will compete in two meets to close out the 2013 portion of the schedule.
