The Saint Benedict women's swimming and diving team had a busy weekend highlighted by the backstroke excellence of Emily Roberts (Eden Prairie, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's). The Blazer senior swept her three backstroke events in a pair of meets with a trio of first-place finishes, and she also helped CSB finish first twice, second and fourth in four relay races. For her performance, Roberts was named the MIAC Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.
Roberts led Saint Benedict in a triangular with Concordia and St. Catherine with two first-place finishes. She won the 200-yard backstroke with at time of 2:16.52 and helped the 200-yard freestyle relay finish first in 1:41.40. She was spectacular again Saturday at the Gustavus Mini-Invitational, contributing to three wins and two more top-four finishes. Roberts won both the 100-backstroke (1:10.78) and 200-backstroke (2:15.84) and led the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:42.94) to victory as well. She contributed to a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:41.56) and a fourth-place effort in the 200-yard medley relay (1:54.60).
Saint Benedict scored 723 to finish third in the Gusties' invite behind winner Gustavus (1,290) and runner-up Carthage (900) and ahead of fourth-place Morningside (186). Roberts and her teammates will the rest of November off and will only swim once in December to conclude the 2013 portion of the schedule. Saint Benedict will host St. Thomas for a dual meet on Dec. 14 in Collegeville, Minn., at 1 p.m.
