Trempealeau, Wis. / Winona Cotter
It was a busy weekend for St. Catherine's swimming and diving team and breakout star Alex Zuelke (Trempealeau, Wis./Winona Cotter). The Wildcats finished third as a team in two separate invites with the first-year swimmer finishing third or better in four individual events and three relay races over the two days. Her performances included three first-place finishes and a pair of meet records. As a result, Zuelke was named the MIAC Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.
Zuelke was tremendous in Friday's UST JoAnn Andregg Invitational at nearby St. Thomas, as her individual wins in the 50-yard freestyle (24.86) and 100-yard freestyle (55.03) also doubled as meet records. She also helped the 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:43.94) finish third. A day later, Zuelke won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.67) and finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.24) at the Macalester Roger Ahlman Invite also in St. Paul. Zuelke also helped the Wildcats finish second in a pair of relay events - the 200-yard medley relay (1:54.25) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:51.57). Her Friday time in the 50 free was 0.3 seconds off the St. Catherine school record, and her 100-yard breaststroke time Saturday is the fastest in the MIAC thus far in 2013-14.
St. Catherine and its first-year swimmer hope to keep the good times rolling with another meet this week at a MIAC institution. The Wildcats travel to Collegeville, Minn., Friday to face off against Saint Benedict and Concordia at 6 p.m. The team will then take a break until the St. Cloud State Invite in Rochester, Minn., Dec. 7-8.
