Friday was quite a day for the Carleton women's cross country team and junior Ruth Steinke (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima). The Knights defeated a total of five nationally-ranked Division II and III teams to win the UWEC Blugold Invitational in Eau Claire, Wis., and Steinke ran to a first-place individual finish to lead her team to the impressive victory. For her performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Steinke Tuesday with the MIAC Women's Cross Country Athlete-of-the-Week award.

Steinke crossed the finish line in just 21:59.7 to win the women's race and best a talented field of 405 runners in a photo finish. Steinke won by less than a second over an unattached runner, and defeated the rest of the best by at least nine seconds. In the process, the 16th-ranked Knights scored 49 points to earn a decisive victory over the star-studded field, defeating the likes of Division II's Minnesota-Duluth (No. 4) and Winona State (No. 11) and three other ranked Division III foes. This fall, Steinke has placed in the individual top six in each of her races.

The Knights will take a week off to celebrate their recent success and rest up for their next race. Steinke and company will return to the trails as Carleton's squad will split up for a pair of races on Saturday, Oct. 18. The Knights will send teams to Wisconsin for both the UW-Oshkosh AAE Invitational and for the UW-La Crosse Tori Neubauer Invitational. Those will be the team's final races prior to the MIAC Championships on Nov. 1.
